Living Our Legacy
Since 1862, Wilshire Boulevard Temple has been part of the fabric of Jewish life in Los Angeles, adapting with each generation while staying grounded in timeless values.
Become part of a story still unfolding, where we honor the past and create the future together.

From a Small Gathering to an Enduring Presence
It all began in 1862, when a handful of Jewish pioneers formed Congregation B’nai B’rith, the first synagogue in Los Angeles. From living rooms to courtrooms, from dusty frontier streets to soaring sanctuaries, our journey has been one of vision, resilience, and deep spiritual purpose.
Over generations, we’ve built magnificent buildings, and we’ve built a community. A place where tradition meets possibility, where stories are shared and passed down, and where Jewish life is celebrated in all its diversity and depth.
A Legacy of Innovation
Wilshire Boulevard Temple has always seen Judaism not just as a heritage, but as a way of life. One rooted in action, compassion, and community.
We’ve been a congregation of firsts, pioneering programs, reimagining ritual, and championing justice through the generations.
We’ve led with bold ideas:
- A focal point for Jewish Life in Los Angeles
- Engaging in civic leadership
- Among first congregations to establish Sisterhood and institute full membership and voting rights to women
- Advocating for civil rights and interfaith collaboration
- Opening the Karsh Center, a groundbreaking hub for social services
- Championing interfaith dialogue
- Introduced Choosing Judaism, an accelerated conversion program

Committed to Growth
Today, Wilshire Boulevard Temple is a spiritual home, a cultural center, and a vibrant community for Jews at every stage of life.
As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain rooted in three central commitments to discovery, growth, and community.
Wherever your story begins, it has a place in ours.
